HOW YOUR SPONSORSHIP HELPS. SPONSORING A CHILD SAVED HANAAN FROM A LIFE OF PROSTITUTION. Hannan came from a very poor family. Her mother, without employment, was destitute because she was divorced. Hanaanīs father disappeared out of their lives after the divorce and contributed nothing to their finances. Divorce in North Africa and in Latin America is very very common, and the result is literally millions of impoverished single mothers struggling to bring up their children alone. Unsupported by the state, you see these single mothers going round begging on buses, in markets, and in public squares and parks. You also see them on public rubbish tips, trying to salvage anything they can sell. Life for the single mother is very hard in many developing countries. For the kids however, it is harder still. One minute they have a father, food, school, clothes and a future. Suddenly, through no fault of their own, they find their father walks out of their lives. The money soon dries up and they start to go hungry. They have to leave school in order to beg for food. As they grow older, there is no money to buy the new clothes that they need. More and more pressure is piled on them as the vicious circle of dire poverty robs them of any opportunity in life. As beggars on the streets they lose their dignity and safety. This was Hanaanīs situation. She was a good looking girl in her early teens when we at sponsor a child met her. Hanaanīs future would have been very grim. In all probability she would have been picked up and taken to a big city, raped and forced into prostitution. However, as a result of the sponsor a child programme, she was able to finish her education. Her childhood, dignity and future were all restored to her.
